Abstract

Native trees are vital in preserving ecological integrity and biodiversity while profoundly impacting ecosystems. Their inclusion in restoration efforts safeguards endangered species, promotes local livelihoods, enhances ecosystem resilience, and contributes to climate change mitigation. Recognizing and prioritizing the ecological impact of native trees is crucial for effective conservation strategies and the long-term sustainability of our natural environment. This study focused on assessing the diversity of native trees in the Bani Communal Forest to provide baseline data for monitoring, policy development, and conservation efforts. Through purposive random sampling, 49 native tree species belonging to 26 families across three quadrats were identified. Moraceae had the highest species richness, followed by Annonaceae, Apocynaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae, Primulaceae, and Sapindaceae. The forest exhibited high species diversity, as indicated by the biodiversity index (1-D = 0.9663). These findings suggest that the Bani Communal Forest may harbor additional native tree species deserving further exploration. Raising awareness about the diversity and distribution of these trees is crucial for biodiversity management and conservation planning by the local government. By recognizing the ecological importance of native trees and implementing conservation strategies, we can ensure the long- term sustainability of the Bani Communal Forest and its associated benefits for the environment and local communities.
